Your domain name is your address on the internet
Domain names are our core business. Here is why a name matters and what makes one valuable.
Why a domain name matters
On the internet, everything revolves around being reachable. A recognisable domain name is the simplest way to put your company, product or service in front of an audience, and to reassure visitors that they have reached the right party. The same goes for your email address: a recognisable address of your own makes a first impression that lasts.
Domain names are often compared to real estate. Good names are scarce and the best locations are taken first. The difference: online, it is not the location but the name that determines whether people find you, whether they search on a computer, a phone or a smart TV.
The range of extensions has grown considerably in recent years, with names such as .shop and .app alongside the familiar .nl and .com. That widens the choice but changes little at the core: a name that is easy to remember and fits what you do remains the most valuable.
Where does a name's value come from?
The number of possible domain names is practically unlimited, yet some names still sell for a lot of money. The value depends on several factors:
- Memorability. Shorter is usually better. A short name that is easy to say and type directly increases its value.
- Clarity. Does the name immediately tell people what they will find? Think of loans.com, cars.com and business.com: among the most expensive names in the world, because they make clear at a glance what they are about.
- Commercial potential. Does the name hold a business opportunity, meet a basic need and attract traffic by itself?
- Status of the extension. The .com remains the best-known extension for an international audience.
.nl or .com?
If you mainly target the Netherlands, a .nl domain is often the best choice. What .com is for the international market, .nl is for Dutch visitors: a familiar, trusted address in their own language. If you aim at a broader audience, combining both is often sensible.
